Icing

a site specific installation by Emma Copley and Claire Sherwood

269 River Street, Troy NY

 March 12 - March 30th

Closing Reception March 30th 5-9pm

Artists will be working in the empty storefront space next door to The Arts Center from March 12th – March 29th, with a closing reception on March 30th. Visitors are welcome to visit the space to view the progress of each piece and discuss the works with the artists.

Together, artists Claire Sherwood and Emma Copley will explore the commonalities and differences that come to the surface of their artwork. Texture, color, structure, scale and materials will all be explored on a large scale through this site-specific work, responding to the term: Icing.

Claire Sherwood is a sculptor who uses non-traditional building materials [Ranging from cast concrete and lace to dirt, coal, sugar, flour, baby powder and currently canned frosting] to examine the blurring lines of domestic duties and architectural spaces. Using the existing architecture of the empty storefront, Claire will construct large objects that interact with the different elements available within that particular space, these objects will then be coated with frosting on site.

Claire received her MFA from the University of Maryland. Her work has been exhibited widely across the United States in both solo and group exhibitions. She currently is an Adjunct Professor of Drawing and Sculpture at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. For more information and images of current work please visit www.clairesherwood.com

Emma Copley was born in Ireland in 1979 and currently lives and works in Troy, NY.  Emma has been developing a practice which celebrates and deconstructs autobiographical narrative and the processes of painting since graduating from Rhode Island School of Design, in 2001. She will be painting large scale elements from frozen landscapes throughout the space, using paper, wood, ink and gouache.

Her work has been exhibited widely across the US and Europe. Emma teaches at The Arts Center of the Capitol Region and runs her own weekly painting and drawing workshops from her home studio in Troy, NY. For more information please contact emma@emmacopley.com or visit www.emmacopley.com
